West End Neighborhood House, Wilmington, Delaware

Our History: World War I

By the advent of World War I, the Neighborhood House was already collaborating with other social service agencies and, in the early months of the war, the United States Navy used the facilities for a barracks and club for the "Navy Patrol" in the city.

In December of 1918, a building was purchased at 708 Lincoln Street with gave birth to our present site today. An Italian-owned construction firm, Ernest DiSabatino and Sons, contracted the remodeling work which took place over the years 1919 and 1920. Ernest DiSabatino's son, Paul E. DiSabatino, served as an active member of our Board of Directors for many years. Go to next history page.
