WEST END Continues to Meet Community’s Basic Needs

Annual Collaboration with Wilmington Jaycees Provides 350 Thanksgiving Baskets

West End Neighborhood House, Inc. was once again honored to partner with the Wilmington Jaycees to provide Thanksgiving baskets to Wilmington families in need.  On Saturday, November 17th, West End began distributing 350 baskets of assorted Thanksgiving-related food at the agency’s main location (710 North Lincoln Street) in Wilmington’s Little Italy Neighborhood. Pre-approved recipients collected the baskets between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and noon, and dozens arrived an hour early on a cold November morning.

The Jaycees and West End have partnered on this annual project for over 17 years.  Thousands of Wilmington families have enjoyed nutritious and delicious Thanksgiving meals due to the hard work of both agencies. The annual basket distribution – which includes a turkey and all the traditional trimmings – represents countless volunteer hours from members of the Jaycees.

When asked about the annual event’s impact on the community, West End Executive Director Paul Calistro responded: “I had an opportunity to meet every recipient and was taken aback by the overwhelming need, yet moved by their gratitude and humility.”

The Wilmington Jaycees is a leadership development, community service, and social organization for people between the ages of 21 and 40 in and around the Wilmington, Delaware area.  In an environment that fosters true friendship, their mission is to provide members the best opportunities for business development, management, leadership and individual training, community service, and international connections.   West End Neighborhood House has been serving the Wilmington community since 1893.  Its mission is to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency, reaching and maintaining their maximum potential, and living responsibly and harmoniously in a healthy community and complex world.
