Junior League helps West End transform a house into a home for at-risk youth

WILMINGTON, DE, March 20, 2010 The Junior League of Wilmington transformed a brick row home on the West Side of Wilmington from a humble house into a sanctuary for several former foster care youth from West End Neighborhood House who were at-risk for becoming homeless.

On Saturday, March 20th, volunteers from The Junior League rolled out new carpet, hung pictures and curtains and installed approximately $20,000 worth of furniture, bedding and kitchen supplies for one of the four houses owned and run by the West End Neighborhood House through its Life Lines Program.

The Junior League is also providing residents with luggage, toiletries and other items to assist the Life Lines youth as they transition into adulthood. Saturday’s home decoration project is part of a three-year initiative between The Junior League and West End. Throughout the duration of the partnership, League members will assist West End in refurbishing, landscaping and maintaining West End’s four houses to provide a comfortable, safe environment for Life Lines residents. The League will also provide a series of life-skills seminars for the houses’ residents. This work is funded through the fundraising efforts of the JLW, with more than $90,000 projected for the project through 2011.

Created in 2001, the Life Lines Program at West End has served hundreds of former and current foster care youth between the ages of 16 and 21. Life Lines offers intensive case management and housing services for youth who have aged out of Delaware’s foster care system and case management for current foster care youth. Currently, Life Lines has the capacity to provide housing for 45 former foster care youth.

Founded in 1918, the Junior League of Wilmington Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
