Lasagna contest kicks off annual West End fundraiser

WILMINGTON – Six restaurants and nine community members vied for the “Best Lasagna on the Block” title today during a contest to kick off West End Neighborhood House’s third annual A Taste of Little Italy community-wide fundraiser.

Eric Ruth from the News Journal, Michael Waite from WJBR, and John Rago from the City of Wilmington chowed down on lasagnas from Mrs. Robino’s, Ristorante Mona Lisa, Papa’s Pastry Shop, Pomodoro’s, Union City Grille and Walter’s Steakhouse. Union City Grille took home the title of Best Lasagna by receiving the highest score in the categories of flavor, texture and complexity. This is the second victory for Union City’s owner Matthew Curtis. Last year, he earned the Best Meatball award. Mona Lisa won the award for having the most original lasagna.

Matt Amis from Delaware Today Magazine, Joe Facciolo, President of the Grand Lodge, and Ciro Popetti from Out & About Magazine crowned Eileen Dorman as the winner of the community contest. Monica Alvarez took home the award for most original lasagna with her spicy vegetarian recipe.

“It was great to win the lasagna contest, but more importantly, I’m proud to be part of an event that brings attention to the Little Italy neighborhood,” said Matthew Curtis, owner of Union City Grille.

While A Taste of Little Italy initially began as a fundraiser for West End three years ago, Paul Calistro, Executive Director at West End, says the event has become an important part of marketing the Little Italy community.

“West End has been helping the Little Italy community thrive for over 125 years,” Calistro said. “A Taste of Little Italy is a great event because it allows us to partner with local businesses and promote our neighborhood as a great place to live, work and enjoy.”

A Taste of Little Italy will be held simultaneously at restaurants and businesses throughout the community on March 23, 24 and 25. For a complete list of all 22 participants and their specials, promotions and menus, visit www.atasteoflittleitaly.com.
