West End helps over 350 children during annual Santa’s Workshop event

Wilmington, December 5, 2009 – West End Neighborhood House helped over 350 low-income children pick out gifts for their loved ones during their annual Santa’s Workshop celebration on Saturday. The event, which is made possible with the help of the community, also featured arts and crafts, refreshments and pictures with Santa in a fun holiday atmosphere.

“This event is so important because it helps children learn the art of giving,” said Kenyetta McCurdy-Byrd, Director of the Reflections Education and Employment program at West End. “Due to an overwhelming demand, we ran out of gifts last year before every child got a chance to shop, but thanks to the support of the community, we were able to serve every child who wanted to participate.”

With the help of community members and local businesses, West End raised thousands of dollars and received hundreds of donated gifts to support Santa’s Workshop. In addition, approximately 150 volunteers from Barclays, UD’s Black Student Union and Circle K, Citibank, Charter High School and Public Allies contributed to the success of Santa’s Workshop. This event has been helping low-income Delawareans for over a decade.
